A Study on the Adoption of Electric Two-Wheelers in Urban Bengaluru


Bengaluru has the 2nd highest number of 2-wheelers in India As we have observed that many people are not aware about Electric 2-wheelers Even if they are aware, there is a lack of charging infrastructure and public charging takes an unreasonable amount of time So, swappable battery is one of the solutions The previous researches have been focused on 3-wheelers and Non-AC city buses as they have
designated stands Research has not been focused on swappable batteries for 2-wheelers in India The aim of the project is to study the consumer adoption of the Electric 2-wheelers and to reduce the charging time span by introducing the model of the swappable batteries so that in future the number of E2W increases in Urban Bengaluru The objectives are
1. To perform NPV and Cost benefit analysis the E2W compared with a conventional 2-wheeler 2. To study the adoption of E2W by analysing the adopters and non-adopters. 3. To develop an optimal model for the swappable battery The tools used to attain the objectives are SPSS and Microsoft Excel The findings from NPV and Cost benefit analysis conclude that owning an Electric 2 wheeler is more beneficial than owning a conventional 2 Wheeler As it saves nearly 15,000 rupees on running cost every year Also, the qualitative factors which need to be factored into the Cost benefit analysis are the cost of the environment which can’t be monetised And there is savings on road tax. As road tax is not applicable for E2W And also, the Government provides subsidies to the customers as well as the manufacturers Based on our survey results, we found out that only 44% of the respondents were willing to spend more than 80,000 rupees on an E2W The main reason being, the early adopters usually have to pay more in Technology Out of all the respondents we found out that 80% agreed that swappable battery is a better option than a charging station 67% were of the opinion that spending a little more money at the battery swapping station is better than spending an hour at the charging station The solution which we’re suggesting is to use swappable battery technology This system can be implemented by using a Hub & Spoke model where there is a centrally located warehouse used to charge and transport batteries to different swappable battery stations located in the city We have also designed an app to help E2W riders to find optimal location for swapping the batteries
